Once you've moved beyond the Glencairn, three European brands enter the comparison. Riedel, Spiegelau, and Zalto. All three continue the glassmaking traditions of Austria and Germany, but differ significantly in design philosophy, materials, and price.

This guide draws on assessments from Wine Spectator, Decanter, Whisky Advocate, and the global bar industry.

Crystal whisky glasses close-up
Crystal glass has a higher refractive index than ordinary soda-lime glass, making the whisky's colour and viscosity appear more vivid. The thin, clear walls reduce the distance between drink and lips

What is Crystal Glass?

Glass divides broadly into soda-lime glass and crystal glass. Crystal glass was traditionally made with the addition of lead oxide (PbO). Lead increases the refractive index and makes the glass more transparent and lustrous. Due to health concerns about lead, however, most brands have now switched to lead-free crystal using barium oxide (BaO), zinc oxide (ZnO), or titanium dioxide (TiO₂).

Properties of crystal glass:

  • Can be formed thinner than ordinary glass → more delicate contact with the lips
  • Higher refractive index makes whisky colour and legs more vivid
  • Clearer, more resonant ring
  • Lower durability than ordinary glass — requires care

Riedel

Founded 1756, Austria | Headquarters Kufstein

Riedel began in Bohemia (now Czech Republic) in 1756 and is now headquartered in Austria. The brand modernised the concept of designing different glass shapes for different beverages: in the 1950s, Claus Josef Riedel introduced variety-specific wine glasses, later expanding into whisky and spirits.

Riedel Vitis Single Malt Glass (approx. 120,000 KRW, set of 2)

Riedel's dedicated single malt whisky glass. The narrow aperture and tulip bowl concentrate the aroma; similar in form to the Glencairn but with thinner glass and a more refined rim. It has frequently been adopted as the standard tasting glass at major international whisky events.

Riedel Bourbon Glass (approx. 80,000 KRW, set of 2)

Designed specifically for bourbon and American whisky. The wider bowl effectively releases vanilla, caramel, and oak aromas. If you primarily drink bourbon, this is more appropriate than the single malt glass.

Riedel Single Malt Glass
Riedel Single Malt Glass — uniform thin wall thickness and a refined rim design; frequently adopted at major international tasting events

Riedel's limitations Riedel uses machine-blown production. This allows for scale and lower prices, but lacks the uneven refractive quality of hand-blown glass. Some lines are dishwasher-safe; others recommend hand washing.

Spiegelau

Founded 1521, Bavaria, Germany | Parent company Riedel Group (acquired 2004)

Spiegelau is one of Europe's oldest glassmakers. Founded in the Bavarian region in 1521, it was acquired by the Riedel Group in 2004 but operates as an independent brand. It is widely regarded as delivering superior quality at a lower price point than Riedel. Wine Spectator has repeatedly named it "Best Value Crystal."

Spiegelau Whisky Tumbler (approx. 30,000–50,000 KRW, set of 2)

An optimised everyday tumbler. Lead-free crystal with high clarity, dishwasher-safe, easy to manage in multiples. Frequently adopted by fine dining restaurants and hotel bars.

Spiegelau Highball Glass (approx. 30,000–40,000 KRW)

A tall, narrow form optimised for carbonation retention. Repeatedly recommended as a highball glass by Decanter. The 350ml capacity comfortably holds ice and sparkling water.

Spiegelau Nosing Glass (approx. 40,000–60,000 KRW, set of 4)

A Glencairn-style tulip nosing glass. Sold in sets of four, making it ideal as a tasting glass for small gatherings. Slightly thicker glass than the Riedel single malt, but correspondingly more durable.

Whisky decanter and crystal glass
A whisky decanter paired with a crystal tumbler — Spiegelau tumblers strike the best balance of value and quality in this kind of home bar setting

Zalto

Re-established 1990s, Austria | Production Vienna, Austria

Zalto is the highest-rated brand among sommeliers and fine dining establishments. Made by hand-blown methods, the glass walls reach industry minimum thickness — some products have walls under 1mm. The lightness and delicacy of holding a Zalto is in a different category from other brands.

Zalto Universal (approx. 100,000–150,000 KRW)

A versatile glass suited to both wine and whisky. The extremely thin glass transmits the liquid's temperature and texture directly to fingertips and lips. Use in Korean fine dining restaurants and whisky bars is growing rapidly. Wine Enthusiast called it "the world's best all-purpose glass."

Zalto Denk'Art Whisky Glass (approx. 130,000–180,000 KRW)

Zalto's dedicated whisky line. The distinctive tilted form is designed to naturally deliver aroma to the nose when drinking. Because it is hand-blown, no two glasses are perfectly identical — each produces a subtly different refraction of light.

Notes on using Zalto

  • Absolutely no dishwasher
  • Do not place on a drying rack — unstable centre of gravity means it tips easily
  • Store upright in a dedicated stand or wrapped in cloth
  • Do not use a wine glass brush to clean the interior

Hand-blown crystal — unlike machine-formed glass, the subtle variation in wall thickness creates complex light refraction. This is the core appeal of the Zalto range

Budget recommendations

  • Under 100,000 KRW → Spiegelau (value first)
  • Under 150,000 KRW → Riedel Single Malt (dedicated design, balance)
  • No budget limit → Zalto (sensory experience first)

All three brands offer a different experience from the Glencairn. Whichever you choose, you will discover new aspects of whisky that the Glencairn never revealed.
